Rendang ( spicy beef )


Rendang or spicy beef will always be the best food for me. It is a special food from west sumatera, Indonesia. This area is so famous for the good food. We call it Padang Food. We can find Padang Restourant all over Indonesia. Jez like Pizza Restourant in the world. Well, our Padang Food is not yet gained its international recognition but soon perhaps šŸ˜€ . Most of Padang foodĀ are spicy. Perhaps that is also why it is not as famous as Pizza.

niaI got this recipe from my mother. She is the best cook! I am so happy when finally I could prepare exactly the same taste like how she prepared the rendang. Oh, I feel like in my hometown with all the aroma of rendang all over my kitchen šŸ˜€ .

It is very easy to prepare. Easier than I thought myself. It tooks about 2 hours to prepare, but believe me, it is worth!

If you do not like so much spicy food, you can reduce the chili as you like.


  • 1 table sp of grounded fresh chili
  • 1 table sp of driedĀ shallot
  • 1 table sp of driedĀ garlicingredients
  • 1 tea sp of grounded coriander
  • 3 cm of galangale
  • 1 cm of ginger
  • 2 cm of cinnamon
  • 1 tea sp of dried bay leaf
  • 1 lemon grass
  • 3 leaves of dried lemon leaf
  • 1/2 tea sp of salt
  • 250 ml of coconut milk
  • 400 gr of beef (cut into 4 cm cubicles)
  • 2 large potatoes

How to cook:

  • Cook coriander without oil in a pan until it smells good and the color changeskalio
  • AddĀ half of the coconutĀ milk and all theĀ ingredients into the pan. Add 250 ml of water then boils it over medium heat.
  • Stir slowly until you can seeĀ some bubble. Leave itĀ boils until the water is reduced into a half.
  • Add the rest of the coconut milk. Stir slowly until it boils. Cook for another 30 minutes. Still once in a while.
  • Mean while boil the potatoes until it is well cooked.potatoes
  • Put the potatoes in side the pan. Mix slowly.
  • Basically the rendang is ready but you can wait until the sauce is thicker. Me, I like it thicker!

Serving for 2 people.

Serve while warm and best served with steamed rice (you can omit the potatoes in this case)
